OF INSTITUTE OF LOSS ADJUSTERS OF NIGERIA (ILAN)
The Institute of loss adjusters of Nigeria is a
Corporate body and one of the three major arms of the Insurance Industry in
Nigeria. Its members provide the necessary technical services to the insurance
market in the areas of claim investigations and settlement, as well as
pre-insurance risk surveys and valuations arising from all aspects of Insurance
business as may be deemed necessary by the underwriters to demonstrate to the
Insured and other interested parties that they have acted in accordance with the
insurance contract (policy) conditions.
ILAN was founded in June 1981 because of the
need to give the required professional training and to have a unified code of
conduct for its members. Membership are of two categories. The first is the
association of all Corporate loss adjusting firms in Nigeria that have been duly
registered by National Insurance Commission. These are corporate members of the
Institute. The second class of membership of the Institute of Loss Adjusters of
Nigeria is divided into five categories – Life, Fellows, associates, Licentiates
and Student Members. Today, the Institute has thirteen Fellows, thirty-one
Associates, Seventy-two Students and Thirty-three Corporate Members.
ILAN’s registered aims and objectives are:
(i)
To established and sustain a professional body of practicing Loss
Adjusters in Nigeria
(ii)
To engage in activities that will ensure the general welfare and public
well-being of Loss Adjusters in Nigeria.
(iii)
In particular (but without limiting the scope of the foregoing) to take
necessary actions for the advancement of education in the field of Loss
Adjusting.
(iv)
The aims objectives shall be pursued:
(a)
By establishing and maintaining institutions, libraries, schools and
recreation centres for
the succour, assistance or education of its
members, and the public in Nigeria of Loss Adjusters
(b)
By applying the funds of the Institute in the purchase of property or
other interests and the establishment or projects, the proceeds of which shall
be appropriated wholly and entirely for the development of Loss Adjusting
profession in Nigeria.
The current President of the Institute is Mr.
Sammy A. I. Sotomi, the Vice-President is Mr. Darlington Mgbojekwe and the
Registrar is Mr. Ralph N. Opara both of them are members of the Governing
Council. The Institute’s Secretariat is at No. 2 Fagbile Street, (Opposite
AFRIBANK) Ojuelegba, Surulere, Lagos State.
The contributions of ILAN to the Insurance
Industry in Nigeria have been so remarkable that it has greatly improved the
public image of Insurers, as the Adjusters continue to enlighten the public on
the limitations of their polices at the times of claim settlement and to give
them further advices for better policy cover, thereby reducing the number of
Insurance litigations arising from Claim disputes in the country.
ILAN examinations are held one a year in October
alongside the Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria examination nation-wide.

The examination is open to all persons in Loss
Adjusting Profession as well as persons involved in claims administration in
the other arms of insurance. It is a post-qualification examination and so the
entry requirement is possession of associateship diploma of the Chartered
Insurance Institute of Nigeria (or London), or possession of a first degree or
equivalent in some approved courses, especially in other professional
disciplines.
